Wewahitchka, Florida Real Estate
Wewahitchka, often shortened to "Wewa" by locals, is a small city in northern Gulf County, about 25 miles north of Port St. Joe on State Road 71. Unlike the beach communities to the south, Wewahitchka is on Central Time, and its setting is rivers, lakes and forest rather than the Gulf.
The town sits near the Dead Lakes, a long, shallow lake on the Chipola River known for its standing cypress and tupelo trees and for freshwater fishing. The Apalachicola River runs just east of town, and the area's creeks, sloughs and boat ramps give paddlers and anglers plenty of water to explore. Dead Lakes Park offers camping and a boat launch.
Wewahitchka is also known as a home of tupelo honey. Beekeepers set their hives along the river swamps each spring, when the white tupelo trees bloom, and the town celebrates with the annual Tupelo Honey Festival at Lake Alice Park, held in May. Lake Alice Park, in the middle of town, is also a local spot for picnics and walks.
Life in Wewahitchka is centered on the outdoors and on land. Properties here tend to have more acreage than you will find near the beach, and many come with room for gardens, boats, workshops or animals, depending on zoning. Port St. Joe and the beaches are about a 35 to 40 minute drive, and Panama City is roughly an hour to the west.
Buying real estate in Wewahitchka
You will find single-family homes, manufactured homes, river and lakefront property, wooded acreage and vacant land. Some properties near the rivers and lakes are in flood zones, while others on higher ground are not, so check each parcel's flood zone and get insurance quotes early. Many rural properties use wells and septic systems, so inspections of those systems are a good idea. Zoning and land use rules affect what you can build or keep on a parcel, so review them with Gulf County before you buy.
