The Gulf County Board of County Commissioners met on March 3rd and covered a lot of ground. I pulled together the main highlights as a quick recap so you don’t have to sit through the full meeting. Here is the link if you want to view the entire meeting.

Here are the things that stood out for residents, homeowners, and anyone watching how Gulf County continues to grow.

Breakwater project is finally getting underway

The long discussed breakwater project is officially moving forward. 

Contractors have started mobilizing equipment and materials, and the dredge is expected to arrive around March 21st. Once it arrives, sand pumping will begin as part of the construction work.

This project has been talked about for years and is aimed at helping stabilize the shoreline and improve coastal protection.

A bike path is being explored between Cape San Blas and Indian Pass

The county voted to begin pursuing funding for a potential bike path from Cape San Blas Road near Dead Man’s Curve down toward Indian Pass Raw Bar.

This would be a long term project. Staff noted that the bike path on Cape San Blas took more than a decade to complete and this would most likely be similar.

If funding can be secured, the goal would be to create a safer route for cyclists and pedestrians traveling through that stretch.

Port property purchase and Dry Dock funding

The county recently finalized the purchase of 33 acres of port property that will support future plans for marine industry development.

Officials said the site could eventually house a marine training academy, workforce programs, and business incubators tied to maritime industries.

The governor is also expected to announce six million dollars in state funding toward a floating dry dock project that would support ship repair operations.

Land purchased for a future park near workforce housing

Commissioners approved moving forward with the purchase of 15 acres along Highway 71 from St Joe Company.

The property sits near the planned workforce housing project and could eventually become a park or sports complex serving the south end of the county.

The goal is to create additional recreation space as the area continues to grow.

Development moratorium lifted for Garrison Estates

The board voted to lift a temporary moratorium related to the Garrison Estates development.

The project will move forward with the condition that only site built single family homes will be allowed on the property.

Additional conversations about development regulations and planning rules are expected later this month.

New financial transparency rules for outside organizations

The county approved a policy requiring organizations that receive $20,000 or more in county funding to provide financial documentation.

Groups receiving that level of funding will now need to submit either an independent audit or a financial review from a CPA.

Commissioners said the goal is to improve accountability and make sure public funds are being handled responsibly.

Disaster debris contractor selected

After reviewing proposals from four companies, the county selected Crowder Gulf as its disaster debris removal contractor.

These contracts allow debris cleanup to begin quickly after hurricanes or major storms, which helps communities recover faster.

Upcoming library event honoring a local hero

The Port St Joe Library announced a special event scheduled for March 28th at 1 PM.

The library will unveil a memorial statue honoring Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Clifford Sims, a Gulf County native who sacrificed his life in Vietnam to save fellow soldiers.

Looking Ahead

The next BOCC meeting is scheduled for March 31st at 3 PM. Topics expected for further discussion include development regulations, gun range policies, and planning updates.
